Fauquier County, VA Business Licensing & Operations: Towing Companies (2026)

Article V of Chapter 13 sets up the county's Law Enforcement Requested Towing program, adopted at the Sheriff's request to ensure proper storage, availability and service from firms called by the Sheriff's Office or other law enforcement (§ 13-62). To join the rotation list a tower must operate as a one-tower proprietorship at one location within the county or Town of Warrenton for at least six months, pass a Sheriff's inspection of its trucks and storage lot, and carry garage keepers legal liability insurance of at least $75,000 per lot, rising to $200,000 for heavy-duty towers, plus $750,000 in general liability (§§ 13-64, 13-65, 13-67).

Applications are accepted only May 1-15 each year for a July 1-June 30 towing year, and an application fee set by the Sheriff is charged (§§ 13-65, 13-66). Each of the county's three geographic tow zones is capped at four authorized towers, the Warrenton and Remington town zones at two each, and the heavy-duty zone (countywide) at two providers (§ 13-70). Storage lots must be enclosed by a six-foot commercial-grade fence, lit, and sized at least 1,500 square feet for light-duty or 3,000 square feet for heavy-duty operators.

Towers must respond within thirty minutes (forty-five for heavy-duty), staff a twenty-four-hour phone line, and accept cash and Visa or MasterCard. A nine-member Fauquier County Advisory Board on Towing and a towing panel hear complaints and can suspend or terminate a tower, with appeal to the Board of Supervisors within ten calendar days (§§ 13-75 through 13-77).
