Schaumburg, IL Cannabis Regulations: Buffer Zones (2026)

21(A)(1) prohibits the location of all adult-use cannabis business establishments within Schaumburg, using authority the state Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act gives municipalities to ban such uses locally, "except as provided for in appendix A (Summary of Permitted and Special Uses)," meaning a cannabis business establishment can operate only after the village board grants a special use permit. Subsection (B)(6)(b) then sets the school buffer: a dispensary "may not be located within one thousand (1,000) feet of the property line of a pre-existing public or private preschool or elementary or secondary school, daycare center or place of worship" when it occupies a single-use property, or, for a tenant in a multi-tenant building, 1,000 feet from that pre-existing use's building footprint and outdoor play areas.

Subsection (B)(6)(b)(3) measures the distance as a straight line from the protected use to the closest part of the dispensary building, or to the boundary of its leased space in a shopping center. A separate 1,500-foot buffer in subsection (B)(6)(a) keeps any new adult-use cannabis business establishment away from a pre-existing one, whether inside or outside village limits. Subsections (C) and (D) then cap the total footprint: no more than five adult-use dispensing organizations, and no more than five combined cultivation centers, craft growers, infusers, processors and transporters, may hold a special use permit at once, though cannabis testing facilities fall outside that cap.
