Height Limits

Unincorporated Ascension Parish's UDC fence ordinance, Section 17-2082-B, does not set a blanket maximum fence height for ordinary residential or commercial lots. It requires walls and fences enclosing refuse, service or sewer treatment facilities to be at least eight feet tall, and it flatly bans any fence or wall inside a required corner sight triangle or a drainage servitude.

D.Height.1.Alternative height. Walls and fences shall be a minimum of eight feet in height if they enclose refuse, service, or sewer treatment facilities. ... F.Prohibited. The following are prohibited:1.Fences and walls located within a servitude or otherwise impede or divert the flow of water in drainage ways; and2.Fences and walls located within any required sight triangle.

Fence Permit Requirements

Anyone building a fence or wall in unincorporated Ascension Parish needs a fence permit from the Building Department before construction starts, under UDC Section 17-2082-B(C). The permit costs $25.00 under the parish's Appendix XII fee schedule, and the fence must meet the section's height, material and location standards to be approved.

Material Restrictions

UDC Section 17-2082-B(E) lists the fencing materials allowed in unincorporated Ascension Parish: natural stone, brick, stucco, wood, vinyl or plastic fencing, decorative concrete block, metal such as wrought iron, and chain link away from arterial road frontage. It separately bans chicken wire, plywood, corrugated metal, barbed wire without director approval, and electrically-charged fences outside agricultural use.
