A stand-alone childcare center, as opposed to an in-home day care, must give each attendee at least 25 square feet of indoor activity space under Surry County Code § 154.008(C)(18), fence any outdoor play area with a solid or chain-link fence at least four feet high, and screen the property from neighbors under § 154.015.

Building Permits

Surry County adopts the North Carolina State Building Codes for all construction in unincorporated Surry County, and its zoning ordinance requires a valid zoning permit before any building permit can be issued. Excavating, constructing, moving, altering or repairing any building or accessory structure, or changing a land or building use, is unlawful until the Zoning Administrator issues that zoning permit, which is void after six months without substantial progress.
