Lenexa, KS Curfew Laws: Park Curfew (2026)

Section 3-9-E-9 of the Lenexa City Code sets one closing window for every park owned and operated by the City: between twelve o'clock midnight and five o'clock A.M. the public is shut out. Park hours are not posted per park in this section. City properties named elsewhere in the code, such as Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park at 87th and Lackman, fall under the same rule whenever they are City-owned and City-operated parks.

The section carries three separate prohibitions. First, it is unlawful for any person to remain in a City park during the time it is closed, so a walk that crosses midnight becomes a violation once the closing time arrives. Second, no person is allowed to park or store any automobile, vehicle, farm or construction machinery, recreational vehicle, truck or trailer in a City park after the official closing time or before the official opening time. That covers a car left overnight in a park lot and a trailer parked at a trailhead. Third, the code treats any violation as a public offense.

The Parks and Recreation Director holds the only flexibility: parks can be closed temporarily, or the hours open to the public extended temporarily, in cases of emergency or adverse weather conditions as the Director determines and orders. The closing rule also stops applying for the duration of any City-sponsored event in the park where it is being held, which is how evening events in a park proceed after midnight without a violation.

The section has no penalty clause of its own. It says a violation is punishable as set forth in Article 3-9-J, and Section 3-9-J-1 sends that to the general penalty in Section 1-1-C-3: a fine of not more than $2,500, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both.
