Sunrise sits at the eastern edge of the Everglades, bordered by Water Conservation Area 2 and Interstate 75 to the west, so its coastal-type issues are really canals and wetlands, not beaches, and there is no coastal construction control line here. Under Land Development Code Sec. 16-219, at site-plan review the city may require an environmental plan where significant wetlands or natural vegetation exist, and an approved preservation plan can waive up to half of required on-site landscaping. Work in or near the primary canal system requires South Florida Water Management District permitting, and wellfield-protection review (Sec. 16-218) applies near city water supplies.
