Rocklin, CA Environmental Rules: Defensible Space (2026)

Rocklin Municipal Code § 8.10.030(A) declares it a public nuisance to fail to maintain defensible space of one hundred feet from each side and from the front and rear of every structure, though the required clearing never extends beyond the property line unless another provision of the code requires it. Section 8.10.020 defines defensible space as the buffer between a structure and wildland area that slows or halts fire spread and protects against ignition from direct flame or radiant heat. Property owners must mow or clear all flammable vegetation and materials, defined in the same section to include dead pine needles, dry weeds and grasses over four inches, dead or dying tree limbs, and refuse piles, and any plant or shrub adjacent to or overhanging a structure must be free of dead or dying wood, though groundcover shrubbery that does not readily ignite is exempted.

Section 8.10.030(B) extends flammable-vegetation maintenance standards to every lot in the city, improved or not, with standards set and amended by council resolution. The fire chief or a designee may grant exemptions under § 8.10.030(C) upon finding one necessary for public health, safety or welfare, and enforces the chapter under § 8.10.070. When a nuisance is found, § 8.10.040 requires the fire chief to give the owner written notice detailing the violation and a deadline to abate, calibrated to the severity of the hazard; owners who voluntarily abate under § 8.10.050 must have the fire chief inspect and confirm compliance, while a property that misses its abatement deadline becomes subject to the full Title 1 nuisance-abatement procedure under § 8.10.060. The chapter supplements, and does not amend, the separate fire-safety standards in Title 15 per § 8.10.010.
