Rocklin, CA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Rocklin Municipal Code Section 17.76.050 lists the materials permitted for fences and walls citywide: wood, masonry, metal, chain link under the separate rules in Section 17.76.055, wire including barbed wire only when used to enclose livestock as defined in Rocklin Municipal Code Section 6.04.130, decorative tubular metal fencing, and any other material the community development director approves. The decorative tubular metal option comes with two design conditions: it must be dark colored and must have a smooth horizontal rail on top, and any pointed or open-rod-topped style is prohibited outright regardless of zone.

Barbed wire is the only material tied to a use restriction rather than a design standard: it is permitted solely to enclose livestock under the Title 6 animal-keeping definition, so it cannot be used around a standard residential yard, pool, or side yard fence. Chain link gets its own chapter, Section 17.76.055, which allows it with or without slats in commercial and industrial zones only through a design review entitlement, and in residential zones only along interior side or rear lot lines, never in or along a front or street side yard or anywhere visible from the public right-of-way; legally preexisting chain link in those locations may remain and be maintained but must be replaced with a conforming material listed above once it is removed or replaced.
