Sunnyvale requires erosion and sediment controls on grading and construction sites under SMC Chapter 18 and the Municipal Regional Stormwater Permit.
Construction projects disturbing soil must install erosion and sediment BMPs under SMC grading provisions and the statewide Construction General Permit for sites 1 acre or larger. Typical required BMPs include silt fencing along perimeters, fiber rolls along slopes, stabilized construction entrances, covered stockpiles, and inlet protection around nearby storm drains. Between October 1 and April 30 (the wet season in the Bay Area) sites must have winterization plans with expanded erosion controls before forecast rains. Sunnyvale Public Works performs inspections and can issue stop-work orders for uncontrolled sediment leaving the site. Homeowners doing smaller projects still must keep sediment onsite and sweep tracked-out soil from streets immediately.
