Casper, WY Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Casper Municipal Code § 17.12.120 sets the citywide fence and wall height ceiling at eight feet in every zoning district, front-yard limits included, except where the section itself carves out a lower number. Any fence, wall, hedge, accessory building or accessory use planted or built between the street and the front building line, or within the required front setback, is capped at four feet (forty-eight inches), and the code measures that height from grade at the spot where the structure sits. Once a residential fence rises above thirty-six inches in that front zone, at least forty percent of its face must be open space, so a solid four-foot privacy wall facing the street does not qualify; only a partly see-through design does.

Corner lots carry an added restriction: the code presumes two front yards, and at any street intersection it is unlawful to place a fence, wall, hedge, shrub, tree, natural growth, accessory building or other obstruction inside the triangle formed by the extended curb lines, measured back thirty feet to form a right triangle, as shown in the code's own Figure 17.12.120. That sight-triangle rule drops away only for plantings or structures under thirty-six inches above the sidewalk. Community Development issues the fence permit that verifies compliance with these numbers before construction, and the department also enforces the tree-branch clearance rule in the same chapter, keeping branches trimmed to eight feet over sidewalks and fifteen feet over streets and alleys near that same corner triangle.
