Commerce City, CO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

The Commerce City Land Development Code sets fence and wall height limits by land use in Table VII-21 under Sec. 21-7732. On residential lots, a fence in the front yard is capped at 42 inches, while rear and side yard fences can rise to 6 feet; agricultural parcels follow the same 42-inch front yard cap, and commercial, industrial and public/institutional properties get taller allowances up to 8 feet along rear and side yards. Minimum setbacks apply too: a residential front-yard fence must sit at least 30 inches back from the property line, while agricultural fences may sit on the line itself.

Sec. 21-7732(2)(a) carves out an exception for reversed-frontage lots: where a property sides onto an arterial, state, or federal highway, a solid fence up to 6 feet is allowed in residential districts, still subject to the table's setbacks. Beyond the numeric limits, Sec. 21-7731(3) imposes a functional sight-distance rule at driveways and corners: no fence or wall may be placed at a height or location that unreasonably blocks the view of a person exiting a property, with the required clear zone set case-by-case based on topography, the posted speed limit, and how close the driveway sits to the fence.

Fence height itself is measured from the highest finished grade directly beneath the fence, or from the top of a retaining wall if the fence sits on one, under Sec. 21-7731(9). Community Development reviews fence height and placement as part of development or building permit review.
