Westminster, CO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 11-4-6(P)(3) of Westminster's zoning code sets fence height by location in residential and business districts. A fence built in front of the front building line, or in front of the required front setback, may be of any classification but cannot exceed 36 inches, except that Class 2 (ornamental iron) and Class 3 (woven wire) fences that are more than 50 percent open may reach 42 inches; ornamental post caps are excluded from the height measurement. Fences in side yards that do not project past the front building line, including rear-yard perimeter fences, may be any class up to six feet tall.

A fence built on top of a retaining wall must still meet these same limits, measured from the ground on the retaining wall's high side to the top of the fence. Industrial districts get more latitude under (P)(4): any fence class is allowed, front-yard fences are capped at six feet, and fences elsewhere on the lot may be any height. Section 11-4-6(P)(6) bans barbed wire unless approved on a development plan and installed at least six feet above grade, and bans electrically charged fences outright.

Corner-visibility protection comes from (P)(7): fences and retaining walls built within vehicular sight triangles or safe lines of sight must meet the City's standard design and construction specifications, and no fence or retaining wall may obstruct a motorist's vision as determined by the City's traffic engineer, with an obstructing fence subject to nuisance abatement under Title VIII, Chapter 4.
