Davis, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

060(b) of the Davis Municipal Code sets the baseline: fences, walls and hedges may go anywhere on a property behind the required front yard setback up to a maximum height of seven feet. Ahead of that setback line, subsection (b)(1) limits height to four feet at any point, measured above ground elevation, except on a corner lot. Corner lots carry an additional visibility rule under subsection (b)(2): a fence, wall or hedge over three feet, measured from the curb gutter grade, cannot sit within a triangular area measured twenty-five feet along the inside face of the sidewalk in both directions from the sidewalk intersection; where no sidewalk exists, the twenty-five-foot measurement runs along the right-of-way line instead.

Subsection (b)(3) allows six-foot fences closer to the street than the general four-foot line: at the ten-foot setback in an interior lot's front yard, or the fifteen-foot setback on a corner lot's front yard. Subsection (b)(4) lets a corner-lot fence run six feet high along the street side yard if it sits back at least five feet from the property line, extending along the rear yard and the length of the house until it meets the corner visibility triangle. 31. 080(b)(6), which the director may grant for up to a ten percent increase in the maximum fence height allowed in the zone.
