Elk Grove, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

52-1 set the general height limits: 3 feet within a required front yard, 3 feet within a required street side yard if less than 5 feet from the back of sidewalk (rising to 7 feet if 5 feet or more from the sidewalk), 7 feet within a required interior side or rear yard, 3 feet within the clear visibility triangle at street, alley, and driveway intersections, and 10 feet outside any required yard. Footnote 4 lets a street side yard fence rise to 6 feet if it uses decorative open wrought iron or tubular steel atop a solid base no taller than 3 feet, with posts up to 18 square inches and 6 feet tall spaced at least 6 feet apart.

Footnote 5 allows interior side and rear yard fences to reach 8 feet with a building permit. Footnote 6 requires rear yard fences along alleys to sit no closer to the pavement edge than the building face, or 10 feet back, whichever is less. 040 from the lowest finished grade at the fence base to the top of the fence material, with a landscape wall beneath a fence counted toward total height. Subsection B gives agricultural and agricultural-residential districts an alternative, ministerial standard: an open-view fence may reach 6 feet within any required yard and 10 feet outside a required yard without a planning permit, provided it is set back from interior property lines by a distance at least equal to its height. Subsection C caps landscape walls within required yards at 36 inches.
