Jackson, NJ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 244-190A requires that fences and walls function for privacy, separation, security, screening or climate control and that their design and materials suit the building and project they serve; walls must be brick, stone or another maintenance-free material, and painted or unpainted concrete block is barred. No fence or wall may be built within a sight triangle or sight distance area if it would create a traffic or safety hazard. On public park, recreation or school property, open wire fences may reach eight feet under § 244-190D(2), and fences around tennis courts, baseball backstops and similar recreation facilities may reach 12 feet.

All fences and walls must sit within the property lines and may not encroach on a public right-of-way, and a fence's supporting members must face the interior of the lot on which it stands, with the finished side facing the neighboring property. Security and animal enclosure fencing in the RC Zone is exempt from these height and design requirements under § 244-190E. A homeowner planning a fence taller than 30 inches near the street, or any fence near an intersection or driveway, should confirm placement with the Division of Land Use/Zoning before construction to avoid a sight-triangle violation.
