Jackson, NJ Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Under § 244-190A(6), no fence or wall anywhere in Jackson Township, residential or otherwise, may contain spikes, barbed wire, razor ribbon or any similar hazardous object. Section 244-190A(7) goes further and lists six fencing types specifically prohibited in all districts of the Township except for agricultural purposes: barbed wire fences, canvas fences, cloth fences, electrically charged fences, expandable fences and collapsible fences. The agricultural carve-out lines up with § 244-176, the Township's right-to-farm ordinance, which allows livestock fencing conforming to the use intended on a permit with no fee, so a working farm can still use wire livestock fencing that a residential or commercial property cannot.

Outside that carve-out, a homeowner or business cannot substitute canvas, cloth or electrified fencing for a conforming wood, vinyl, chain-link or masonry fence, even temporarily. General fence rules on placement, materials and finish under § 244-190A remain in force for any fence not on the prohibited list, including the requirement that supporting members face the interior of the property and that the finished side face the neighboring lot, and that walls be built of brick, stone or another maintenance-free material rather than painted or unpainted concrete block.
