La Grange, MO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

La Grange's fence rules sit in Section 505.130 of the Building and Construction title, adopted by Ordinance No. 633 on July 27, 2020. Subsection B sets the dimensional limits: fences of masonry, vinyl, stone, wood, chain-link or steel/iron ornamental material may rise no higher than six feet above grade in a rear or side yard. A front-yard fence is held to four feet above grade regardless of material, cannot exceed 50 percent opacity, and must still satisfy whatever setback requirement applies to that yard. Fencing built to contain livestock gets a separate rule: it may reach six feet but cannot stand within ten feet of a public roadway.

The Chapter's general rules layered on top of the height limits matter just as much: no fence may be built inside a public street or alley right-of-way, none may block the sightlines of normal traffic flow or create a public-safety hazard, and none may obstruct stormwater drainage across the lot. Before any fence goes up or is modified, the owner must obtain a fence application and permit from the City, submitting a sketch or diagram, a location map or survey, and the proposed material. Fences must be built with supports on the interior of the lot, hidden from neighbors and the public right-of-way, and kept straight and parallel to the lot line.

Maintenance is the property owner's ongoing duty; a fence the City finds has become a nuisance to public health, safety or welfare must be taken down by the owner. Enforcement runs through the Building Official, and because Chapter 505 carries no fence-specific fine, Section 560.020 routes violations to the City's general penalty in Section 100.220.
