La Grange, MO Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 505.130, added by Ordinance No. 633 on July 27, 2020, sets a closed list of materials for fences in La Grange. Subsection B(1) restricts a standard residential fence to masonry, wood, vinyl, stone, chain-link, or steel/iron ornamental material. Barbed wire, smooth wire, woven wire and pipe fencing are pulled out of that list entirely: the Code allows them only where the fence is being used for livestock and sits on a real estate tract of five acres or larger. The electrified-fence ban in Subsection A(6) tracks the same acreage line, prohibiting any fence charged or designed to be charged with electric current except on a livestock tract of five acres or more.

Materials aside, Subsection A also folds in safety limits that apply regardless of what a fence is made of: no fence may sit inside a public street or alley right-of-way, none may restrict sightlines from normal traffic flow or create a hazard to public safety, and none may block or obstruct the flow of storm water across the lot. Any fence, in whatever approved material, must be built with its horizontal and vertical supports on the interior of the lot so they face the owner's own property rather than the neighbor's yard or the street, and it must run straight and parallel to the lot line.

A fence application and permit identifying the material to be used is required from the City before construction, per Subsection C. The Building Official enforces these material rules, and because Chapter 505 sets no fence-specific fine, a violation is punished under the Section 100.220 general penalty by way of Section 560.020.
