Smyrna, GA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 503-A.1 of the Smyrna Zoning Ordinance, Appendix A, sets the overall ceiling: no fence can be more than eight feet in height, and none can be constructed in a public right-of-way. Section 503-A.3 lowers the limit in the front yard. For this purpose a front yard includes a corner lot on which both yards abutting a street are deemed front yards. Within a front yard, a decorative or ornamental rail, split rail, picket, opaque, basket weave or similar fence built of wooden materials is allowed only if it does not exceed four feet in height. Decorative wrought iron or black aluminum fencing is also allowed at no more than four feet.

Section 513 adds a vision clearance rule that reaches fences in every zoning district. No fence, wall, structure, shrubbery or other obstruction to vision between the heights of three feet and 15 feet is permitted within 20 feet of the intersection of right-of-way lines of streets, highways and railroads. Utility poles, light or street sign standards and tree trunks are excepted.

Special fences follow their own numbers. Section 503 lets the owner of a required ten-foot buffer strip erect a permanent or opaque fence not less than six feet in height where planting cannot meet the buffer standard. Section 512.3 requires electrical transformer stations, telephone exchanges and gas regulator stations to be enclosed by a woven wire fence or similar structure not less than eight feet high. The zoning definition of structure includes fences, so section 1302 requires a building permit from the building inspector before a fence is erected.
