Smyrna, GA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 98-2 of the Smyrna Code, adopted as Ord. No. 2017-09 on 7-17-17, replaced an older penalty-only section and now holds the city's on-street parking rules. Subsection (a)(1) covers two-way roadways: a stopped or parked vehicle must sit with its right-hand wheels parallel to and within 12 inches of the right-hand curb, or as close as practicable to the right edge of the right-hand shoulder. Subsection (a)(2) covers one-way roadways: park parallel to the curb in the direction of authorized traffic movement, with right-hand wheels within 12 inches of the right-hand curb or left-hand wheels within 12 inches of the left-hand curb. Under (a)(3), angle parking on a municipal roadway is permitted only if the city has determined the roadway is wide enough to avoid interfering with the free movement of traffic.

Signs control the rest. Under (a)(4), where the city finds by resolution or order entered in its minutes that stopping, standing or parking is dangerous or would unduly interfere with traffic, it places official signs, and no person can stop, stand or park in violation of them. Sec. 98-7 continues earlier ordinances designating no parking areas and limited parking areas, with copies on file in the city clerk's office.

Residents start a no parking zone with a written petition to the city engineer or designee, supported by signatures of at least 70 percent of the owners of property abutting the street. After validation the street is reviewed, and if the city engineer finds the criteria met, the petition goes to the Mayor and Council at a regular meeting. Their decision is final. City staff can set up temporary no parking zones for no more than a consecutive 30 days without council approval for public safety, construction or engineer projects, or city sponsored functions. Longer needs a written request to the Mayor and Council.

Sec. 98-4 bars parking a commercial vehicle in a license-tag weight category heavier than 6,000 pounds on the right-of-way of a residential street or on residential property unless it is making a delivery there; school buses are excluded. Driveway blocking and wrong-way parking are not separately addressed in Sec. 98-2. Sec. 98-1 adopts the state uniform rules of the road, O.C.G.A. §§ 40-1-1 through 40-15-5, as the city's traffic regulations.
