Springfield, OH Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

In the City of Springfield, Ohio, fence height in residential districts is governed by Zoning Code Section 1120.04 FENCING STANDARDS. Fences are optional citywide (Section 1120.04(a)(1)), but any fence built in the required front yard of a residential district cannot exceed three feet, per Section 1120.04(a)(2), and no fence may stand inside the required right-of-way (Section 1120.04(a)(3)). Section 1120.04(a)(4) bars any fence from conflicting with the sight visibility triangle required by Section 1115.03(e), which keeps corner intersections clear for drivers. On corner lots with opposing rear lot lines, Section 1120.04(b)(1) permits fences up to six feet along the side and rear lot lines.

Where a corner lot's rear line instead backs onto an alley across from a side lot line, Section 1120.04(b)(2) limits the side yard next to the street to three feet beyond the minimum side yard line. Outside those specific caps, Section 1120.04(c)(1) sets a general design standard: a six-foot minimum and eight-foot maximum height from natural grade, built of treated lumber on galvanized poles set in concrete (Section 1120.04(c)(2)). Every fenced enclosure must include at least one gate (Section 1120.04(a)(5)), and owners must keep fences compliant at all times; the Community Development Director may order repair or removal of a fence that is more than ten percent damaged or leaning twenty degrees from vertical (Section 1120.04(a)(6)).
