Woodbury, MN Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 6-140 sets Woodbury's fence height scheme yard by yard. Under subsection (a), a fence up to six feet tall may run along the rear lot line and the side lot lines, and it may return toward the street only as far as the front corner of the principal building, never closer to the street than that corner. Subsection (f) tightens that further for the stretch of side yard forward of the front corner: fences there cannot exceed four feet. For the front yard itself, subsection (d) bars any fence over 30 inches from extending across a front yard in residential platted areas, keeping sightlines and streetscapes open near the road.

Subsection (e) offers a taller option in the rear yard only: fences up to eight feet are allowed there provided they sit back at least ten feet from side property lines and 35 feet from the rear property line, trading additional height for additional setback. Commercial and industrial parcels are treated differently under subsections (b) and (c), which allow six-foot fences on the lot line and, with a special use permit, eight-foot fences carrying a barbed-wire security arm, though no fence in those districts may exceed the height of the principal structure or encroach on required yards or come within ten feet of a rear lot line.

Section 6-137 lets a property owner appeal any of these height limits through the same variance procedure used for zoning variances in chapter 24, and section 6-138 separately requires every fence, regardless of height, to be properly maintained for appearance and safety.
