Woodbury's zoning code (Sec. 24-245) bars most commercial vehicles from parking or being stored in residential zones unless they are actively loading, unloading, or rendering a service. Prohibited vehicles include large trailers, step and food vans, tall box and flatbed trucks, and CDL-required vehicles.
Under Sec. 24-245 of the Woodbury zoning code, commercial vehicles are prohibited from being parked or stored in residential zoning districts except while actively loading, unloading, or rendering a service to a property. The ordinance lists specific prohibited vehicle types: trailers over 3,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (with exceptions for recreational vehicles and certain agricultural trailers on permitted agricultural property); step vans, food trucks, and food trailers; box trucks and flatbed trucks in excess of eight feet in height; vehicles for which a commercial driver's license (CDL) is required to operate; and vehicles exceeding a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds. These limits keep heavy commercial equipment out of residential neighborhoods overnight and on a standing basis. Smaller work vehicles such as pickups and standard vans that fall below these thresholds are generally treated like ordinary passenger vehicles. Because the rule turns on weight, height, and license class rather than simply on lettering or signage, owners of larger trucks, trailers, and service vehicles should confirm compliance with Woodbury Code Enforcement at 651-714-3500 before parking at a home. Winter parking Ordinance No. 14-122 and state restrictions in Minnesota Statutes Sec. 169.34 apply to commercial vehicles on the street as well.
Parking or storing a prohibited commercial vehicle, such as a CDL-required truck, a box or flatbed truck over eight feet tall, a step or food van, or a trailer over 3,000 pounds GVW, in a residential zone when not actively loading, unloading, or providing a service violates Sec. 24-245 and can result in a code enforcement notice and citation.
