Fire pit rules in Woodbury, MN — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Woodbury allows backyard recreational fires without a permit but sets firm limits under City Code Section 15-1, subd. 1: fires no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in flame height, at least 5 feet from property lines and 25 feet from structures, only clean dry natural wood, and no fires when wind exceeds 10 mph.
Recreational fires - the typical backyard fire pit, chiminea or campfire-style fire - are governed by Woodbury City Code Section 15-1, Subdivision 1, and the city's published Recreational Fire Guidelines. No permit is required for a recreational fire, but the operator must follow every guideline or risk being ordered to extinguish the fire or being cited. The fire may not exceed 3 feet in diameter with a maximum flame height of 2 feet. It must be on the owner's property, a minimum of 5 feet from property lines, and not within 25 feet of any structure or combustible material. Portable outdoor fireplaces (manufactured fire pits) must be used per the manufacturer's instructions and kept at least 15 feet from a structure or combustible material. Only clean, dry, natural wood may be burned; treated or painted wood, plastic, rubber, leaves and grass are prohibited. Burning is allowed only between 8 a.m. and midnight daily. No fire is allowed if wind speed exceeds 10 miles per hour, and flammable or combustible liquid accelerants are not permitted. The fire must be constantly attended and supervised by an adult until completely extinguished, and a connected garden hose or other means to extinguish must be readily available. If the Minnesota DNR has issued a burning ban, all recreational fires are prohibited.
Violating the recreational fire guidelines under City Code Section 15-1 can result in an order to extinguish the fire and a citation. The Woodbury Public Safety Department enforces these provisions; reach the EMS Fire Division at 651-714-3600.
