Gulfport, MS Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Appendix A's supplementary yard regulations spell out both what a fence can be made of and how tall it can be by district. In residential districts (R-O, R-B, T4L, T4+), a fence from the front facade line back to the rear property line cannot exceed six feet above grade, though a decorative topping at least 50 percent transparent can bring it to eight feet; between the facade line and the front property line the cap drops to four feet, and barbed or razor wire is expressly prohibited.

Business and industrial districts (E-G) allow fences up to ten feet including posts, with a maximum of two feet of barbed or razor wire on fences at least eight feet tall, but that wire can never sit on a fence bordering a residential use or district. Materials are limited to brick, wood, stucco or wrought iron look, or fence types such as stockade, split rail, picket, decorative bollard and chain link in wood, vinyl or veneered metal; industrial painted metal panels can't run more than one unarticulated foot.

Electrically charged wire, hardware cloth, chicken wire and similar agricultural wire are banned outright, as is any fence made wholly or partly of cloth or canvas. A property owner who wants to exceed these limits must seek a variance, which the zoning board weighs against safety, visual impact on neighbors, and compatibility with the surrounding neighborhood.
