Palm Beach Gardens, FL Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Sec. 78-186(b)(7) of the Palm Beach Gardens Code, part of the city's Yards regulations, sets separate fence-material standards for residential and nonresidential zoning districts. In residential districts, fences and walls top out at six feet, or eight feet for perimeter fencing around a residential PUD, and subsection (7)(f) flatly bars barbed wire in residential zoning districts and in residential portions of a planned unit development or planned community district. Nonresidential districts get a narrow exception: subsection (7)(b)(2) lets a property install barbed wire, capped at three horizontal or vertical strands, at the top of a fence in industrial zoning districts or industrial portions of a PUD or PCD, provided the wire stays within the fence's permitted height.

Razor wire and concertina wire are barred everywhere in the city unless the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board (PZAB) grants an exception under the variance standards of Sec. 78-53. The code carves out a second, agricultural exception: barbed wire is allowed in the AR and AE zoning districts when tied to a bona fide agricultural operation, and any such barbed-wire fence must sit back at least 25 feet from the property line. Electrified fencing follows its own rule in subsection (7)(h): it is permitted only as an accessory to a bona fide agricultural operation, must be enclosed by a non-electrified fence or wall at least six feet high with a 4-to-8-inch separation gap, and must carry warning signage meeting ISO-3864 placed within ten feet of every corner and no more than 45 feet apart.

Chain-link fencing must be vinyl-coated in black or dark green, except on single-family and duplex lots. Height and material variances for any fence, including one near an industrial or agricultural boundary, go through the PZAB.
