Hall County, GA Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

UDC Sec. 2 opens with a blanket statement that fences and walls are permitted in all districts, and when erected in compliance with the standards of that section, fences and walls do not require a building permit. That compliance package covers the height caps in Sec. 1-3 (7 feet in side and rear yards, 6 feet in yards adjacent to a street, 4 feet for walls), the material and design rules in Sec. 4 that dictate acceptable construction for residential versus nonresidential fences, the ban on discarded or scrap materials, and the requirement in Sec.

5 that no fence or wall may be erected in the county right-of-way. A fence or wall that exceeds a height cap, uses a prohibited material such as barbed wire outside agricultural use, or encroaches into the right-of-way falls outside this exemption and reverts to needing the standard building permit review that applies to any other structure under the UDC. The exemption also does not excuse compliance with the corner-visibility rule cross-referenced in Sec. 6, which sends fence and wall builders near street intersections to the separate vision-clearance standard in Sec. F.
