Hall County, GA Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Sec. A defines the keeping of livestock and poultry to cover "cattle, horses, donkeys, mules, goats, sheep, swine and other hoofed animals; poultry, ducks, geese, pigeons, peacocks and other live fowl; and fur or hide-bearing animals," kept as an accessory use to a single-family detached dwelling, but the definition carves out "small species of pigs, cage birds, cats, dogs, or rabbits kept within a dwelling as a household pet," which fall outside this section entirely. The use standards at Sec. B require at least 15,000 square feet of land for each domestic livestock or hoofed animal kept, meaning a homeowner needs roughly a third of an acre per animal before adding poultry.

Livestock and fowl must be "adequately contained within the property boundaries," and any structure or building used to keep the animals, such as a coop or barn, must sit at least 100 feet from every property line. The section also flatly bars the breeding or sale of livestock, poultry or other animals for profit, and separately excludes the butchering, slaughtering or killing of animals from what this accessory use covers, keeping backyard flocks and small herds distinct from the county's commercial agriculture and heavy-industrial animal-processing categories.
