Lawton, OK Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 6-1-1-107(A)(1)(a) lists fences and walls among the specific improvements requiring a building permit under the general permit rule of Section 6-1-1-107(A). A permit is required for construction of any new fence or wall. It is also required for modification or reconstruction of an existing fence or wall if that work involves placing additional posts, replacing existing posts in a new location, or excavating more than six inches below the existing ground surface. Separately, any modification or reconstruction of a fence or wall located within a drainage easement, or crossing a drainage facility, needs a permit regardless of scope.

75. As with other permitted work, the application must include duplicate scaled plans under Section 6-1-1-107(B) showing the fence's location and dimensions on the lot, and the building official marks the plans approved or disapproved before returning a copy to the applicant. A fence permit follows the same expiration schedule as other permits under Section 6-1-1-108: generally 180 days for work that is not new construction or an addition, unless the fence is part of a larger new-construction project, in which case the one-year expiration applies.
