Cook County requires pool barrier fencing for all residential swimming pools. In-ground pools require fencing per the adopted International Residential Code. Above-ground pools over 24 inches deep also require barriers. Health Department approval is mandatory.
Cook County requires safety barriers around all residential swimming pools in unincorporated areas. The 2009 International Residential Code adopted under Chapter 102 mandates pool fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates. Barriers must be at least 48 inches high with openings no larger than 4 inches. Gates must open away from the pool. In-ground pools of any depth exceeding 18 inches require barriers. Above-ground pools with a depth exceeding 24 inches or a surface area exceeding 250 square feet require barriers as well. The Cook County Department of Public Health must approve residential pool construction prior to applying with Building and Zoning. Pool fencing is inspected as part of the pool permit process.
Pool without required barrier: building code violation, $100β$1,000 fine. Stop-use order until barrier is installed. Health department violation possible.
