Fire pit rules in Bend, OR β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Recreational fires are allowed in Bend year-round. Bend Code 5.30.005 caps approved fires at 3 feet in diameter, and Bend Fire & Rescue guidance says fires should be no bigger than 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall, kept at least 25 feet from buildings and tall fences, burning only clean dry firewood.
Although open debris burning is banned, Bend Code 5.30.005(2) allows campfires, warming fires, cooking fires, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kiln fires, and similar approved fires that are no more than 3 feet in diameter, plus cooking pits approved by the Bend Fire Department β provided they comply with the adopted fire code and the Fire Department's Outdoor Burning Regulations. Bend Fire & Rescue's published guidance adds practical limits for recreational, campfires, and warming fires: keep the fire no bigger than 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall, and at least 25 feet away from buildings and tall fences where possible (store-bought fire pits may follow manufacturer recommendations). Only clean, dry firewood that doesn't produce heavy smoke may be burned β never trash or garbage. Someone must stay with the fire, and it must be completely out and cold to the touch before leaving. The City advises calling Bend Fire & Rescue to confirm conditions before burning, and open fires are prohibited on City, County, or ODOT lands (propane devices may be allowed with landowner permission).
A recreational fire that exceeds the allowed size or violates burning regulations is enforced under Bend Code 5.30.005, a Class B civil infraction. Burning prohibited materials (trash, yard debris) in a fire pit, leaving a fire unattended, or burning during a declared high-fire-danger ban can result in citation and liability for any resulting fire.
