Section 307.4.2 of the IFC, as locally amended, allows recreational fires in a portable outdoor fireplace or in-ground pit if: the burning pile is no more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet tall; the fire is at least 25 feet from any structure, property line, or combustible material (15 feet for a UL-listed portable device); only clean seasoned wood or charcoal is burned (no leaves, trash, or construction debris); an adult attends with a fire extinguisher or hose; and no active burn ban is in effect for Dallas County. Gas fire features are exempt from the 25-foot rule if listed and installed per the manufacturer.
