Sec. 24-54(1) of the city code lets residents build a camp fire or bonfire for recreation, ceremonies, outdoor cooking, or warming outdoor workers, but only inside a noncombustible container or a pit covered with metal mesh or grill, set back 50 feet from any structure and 25 feet from trees, woodland or brush. The fire must stay attended with extinguishing equipment on hand, burn only dry material, and avoid smoke or odor heavy enough to be a nuisance. Except for cooking fires, the fire department must authorize the fire in advance.
