Fire pit rules in La Habra, CA — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
La Habra has adopted the County of Los Angeles Fire Code (LHMC Chapter 15.46), so backyard fire pits and portable fireplaces follow County Fire Code Section 307. Small recreational fires are allowed, but must keep clearance from structures, stay attended, and comply with South Coast AQMD no-burn alerts.
Under the adopted L.A. County Fire Code § 307.4.2, a recreational fire must not be within 25 feet of any structure or combustible material, and its fuel area is limited to 3 feet or less across and 2 feet or less high. A manufactured portable outdoor fireplace (§ 307.4.3) generally must be 15 feet from structures, with an exception for units at one- and two-family dwellings. Section 307.5 requires the fire be constantly attended until fully out, with an extinguisher, hose, or dirt available. Only clean, dry firewood may be burned — no trash or leaves. The South Coast AQMD issues winter No-Burn Day alerts that suspend recreational wood fires.
A fire pit that violates clearance, size, or attendance rules, or burns on an AQMD no-burn day, can be ordered extinguished and cited by L.A. County Fire under the adopted code (LHMC 15.46). Escaped fires may bring cost-recovery and liability.
