Fire pit rules in Sunrise, FL — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Sunrise broadly bans open burning under City Code Sec. 6-59. The only residential exception is outdoor noncommercial cooking of food, so wood fire pits used just for warmth aren't permitted; ceremonial fires need fire-department approval.
Section 6-59 defines open burning as any outdoor fire that produces or may produce air pollution and prohibits it citywide. The exceptions are narrow: outdoor noncommercial preparation of food (charcoal, gas, and grilling), fire-department-approved frost protection or ceremonial fires, safety flaring, and enclosed refractory chambers for land clearing. A backyard wood fire pit or chimenea used purely for ambiance falls outside these exceptions. Sunrise Fire-Rescue enforces the Florida Fire Prevention Code with Broward County amendments, adopted in Sec. 6-51. Propane and gas fire features used to cook food are treated as permitted food preparation.
Open burning outside the Sec. 6-59 exceptions is enforced by Sunrise Fire-Rescue and code enforcement, with penalties under City Code Sec. 1-15. A fire that escapes and causes damage can bring Florida arson charges.
