Outdoor burning rules in Sunrise, FL β also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance β set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Sunrise prohibits open burning citywide under City Code Sec. 6-59. Burning yard waste, trash, or debris is not allowed. Narrow exceptions cover outdoor cooking, fire-department-approved ceremonial fires, and enclosed land-clearing chambers.
Section 6-59 bans all open burning, defined as any outdoor fire that produces or may produce air pollution, except six narrow cases: outdoor noncommercial cooking of food; fire-department-approved frost protection; safety flaring of waste gases; fire-department-approved ceremonial fires; vegetation burning for land clearing only inside an enclosed refractory chamber with forced draft approved by the fire department; and burning the city commission permits in the public interest. Household yard-waste and trash burning is therefore prohibited, and residents use the city's yard-waste and bulk collection instead. Statewide, open burning is also governed by Florida Forest Service authorization and Fla. Admin. Code 5I-2, but urban Broward County allows essentially none.
Unauthorized open burning violates Sec. 6-59 and is enforced by Sunrise Fire-Rescue and code enforcement under City Code Sec. 1-15. Fire escaping to neighboring property can bring civil liability and Florida wildfire penalties under Fla. Stat. Ch. 590.
