Despite Ohio's 2022 consumer fireworks law (ORC §3743.45/§3743.451) permitting discharge of 1.4G fireworks on designated holidays statewide, Columbus has exercised its local opt-out authority to prohibit private fireworks discharge within city limits. No person may discharge, ignite, or explode consumer fireworks on private property without a Columbus Fire Department permit. Sparklers and novelties classified under state law as safe are still controlled at city level. Permitted professional exhibitions allowed with advance city approval. First-degree misdemeanor for violations.
