New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 21:3-1 et seq.) prohibits the sale, possession, and use of consumer fireworks. A 2017 amendment (P.L. 2017, c.74) legalized only sparklers, handheld sparklers, and ground-based sparkling devices/fountains (up to 75 grams). All aerial fireworks, firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, and similar devices remain illegal. Professional displays require state permits from the NJ Division of Fire Safety. East Orange may impose additional restrictions on permitted devices.
First offense: up to $500 fine. Subsequent: up to $1,000. Possession of illegal fireworks: confiscation + fines. Injury/damage: criminal charges.
