East Orange, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Rather than a single citywide residential parking district, East Orange runs its preferential overnight parking through § 260-14, which names specific streets, including Prospect Street, Walnut Street, Washington Terrace, North and South Munn Avenue, William Street, 14th through 19th Streets, North and South Arlington Avenue, Washington Street, Chestnut Street and Carnegie Avenue, where the Department of Public Works has posted signs allowing overnight parking by permit. The East Orange Parking Authority is the issuing officer. An applicant proves residency with a valid New Jersey driver's license, motor vehicle registration, proof of insurance, lease or a property tax bill or deed, and can add two secondary documents, such as an IRS letter, bank statement or utility bill dated within 90 days, if needed.

Permits run on the calendar year and cost $150, prorated monthly down to $12.50 in December; residents 65 and older or certified totally disabled pay $75 regardless of when in the year they buy the permit, and a college student can get one free with proof of enrollment. Even with a permit, parking on those streets is barred Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon so the Department of Public Works can clean the street, and permits are suspended during snowfalls over three inches until the vehicle is moved.

A vehicle without a valid permit on a listed street may be ticketed, and after the third consecutive ticket for noncompliance the East Orange Parking Authority or police will tow it, with the owner paying all towing, removal and storage costs.
