East Orange, NJ Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

East Orange regulates heavy trucks on residential and commercial streets alike through Chapter 260, Vehicles and Traffic. Section 260-15.1 states flatly that "no person shall park a truck, tractor, trailer, semitrailer or omnibus having registered gross weights in excess of 10,000 pounds upon any street or parts of streets within East Orange," a citywide ban that reaches residential blocks with no separate exemption written into the section. It sits alongside Section 260-15, which independently makes it unlawful for any truck, truck tractor, trailer, or combination to be parked on any City street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., and which carries its own penalty: a fine up to $2,000, with the court required to impose at least $500 for a first offense and at least $1,000 plus towing for any later offense.

A separate residential overnight parking permit scheme in Chapter 260 also excludes commercial vehicles covered by Sections 260-15 and 260-15.1 from overnight permit parking altogether. Chapter 186 adds a narrower rule for licensed open-air parking lots specifically: Section 186-17 bars commercial vehicles over one-ton capacity or with dual rear wheels from parking in a licensed lot located in a residential district, and requires that any commercial vehicle parked there keep tools, equipment or debris out of public view. Because Section 260-15.1 does not spell out its own penalty, a violation defaults to the Code's general penalty in Section 1-15A: a fine of $100 to $2,000, up to 90 days of imprisonment, or up to 90 days of community service.
