East Orange, NJ Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

East Orange's residential parking rule in § 51-157.A is an outright list of vehicles a homeowner cannot keep in a yard area or on a driveway anywhere in a residence district. Camping trailers are allowed only up to 18 feet; anything longer is barred, as are trailers used for dwelling purposes of any size. Boats are capped the same way: any boat over 18 feet, regardless of type or design, cannot be parked or left standing in a residential yard or driveway. The same subsection separately bars unregistered motor vehicles of any type, buses, tractor-trailers and commercial trailers designed to draw other vehicles, and trucks with a capacity over 1½ tons, with a narrow exception for trucks actually rendering a service to the premises at the time.

Section 51-158 carves out one relief valve: a commercial vehicle of ½ ton or less can be stored or garaged in a residential district if it is kept inside an enclosed garage, so the ban is really about open storage in yards and driveways rather than ownership of a work vehicle. Because § 51-157 sits in Article XXIV, Off-Street Parking and Loading Requirements, alongside the front-yard parking ban in § 51-151.B, an oversized boat or trailer that might otherwise fit in a driveway is barred twice over if the driveway runs through the front yard.

The Zoning Officer within the Department of Policy, Planning and Development has authority to act on a complaint about an oversized trailer or boat sitting in a residential yard.
