East Orange, NJ Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

City Code § 260-14, subsection A, sets East Orange's default rule: no person may park a vehicle on any street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. of any day. The only exception is a short list of streets the Department of Public Works has posted with signs allowing overnight parking by permit, including Prospect Street, Walnut Street, Washington Terrace, Burnet Street between Lenox and Elwood Avenues, North and South Munn Avenue, William Street, 14th through 19th Streets, North and South Arlington Avenue, Washington Street, Chestnut Street and Carnegie Avenue.

Subsection A(3) makes clear the exception only runs one way: overnight parking is never authorized on the separate list of streets named in subsection J, even with a permit. Even where an overnight permit is valid, subsection A(2) still bars parking on those same streets Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon so the City can clean the street, and heavier snowfalls exceeding three inches under subsection D require the vehicle to be moved regardless of the permit. Commercial vehicles covered by §§ 260-15 and 260-15.1 are excluded from overnight parking entirely under subsection F, and alternate-side parking for street cleaning is separately enforced under subsection G on the permit streets.

A vehicle found on a public street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. outside the exception list, or without the required permit on a listed street, is subject to ticketing, and repeated tickets lead to towing at the owner's expense.
