Edison, NJ Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Under Edison Township Code § 11-20.1, any applicant seeking to display or discharge fireworks must submit an application at least twenty-one days before the event, accompanied by a $331 permit fee, filed in accordance with N.J.A.C. 5:70-2 et seq. At the time of application the applicant must also post a $2,500 cash bond to cover potential property damage under § 11-20.2, tied to N.J.S.A. 21:3-5, and a separate $500 cash escrow under § 11-20.3 to cover the Township's legal review costs and the expense of drafting the authorizing resolution.

Review does not stop with the fee desk. Section 11-20.4 sends the application to the Township Attorney to confirm the applicant carries appropriate insurance, and then to both the Chief of the Division of Police and the Chief of the Division of Fire under N.J.S.A. 21:3-3; both chiefs must independently determine the planned display is safe and poses no hazard to persons or property. Only after that review can the Department of Law draft a resolution, and § 11-20.5 gives the Township Council, not any staff office, sole authority to issue the permit by majority vote, citing N.J.A.C. 5:70-2.7(a)5(iii). Once the resolution passes, § 11-20.6 has the Chief Fire Inspector actually issue the permit, in the form required by N.J.S.A. 21:3-4, the state statute governing permit contents, storage-place approval, and nontransferability.
