Greenwich, CT Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Chapter 8's baseline rule, Section 8-7(a), makes it unlawful to burn fuel, including solid wastes, in a way that sends products of combustion directly into open air without pollution controls, paired with a Health Department permit requirement in Section 8-16 for anything the rule would otherwise cover. Section 8-7(b) exempts four narrow categories from that permit scheme, including, at subsection (4), the use of fireworks where use is authorized under State law. The Town did not write its own licensing scheme, fee schedule or hours restriction for fireworks into the Code; it simply declines to treat state-authorized fireworks use as prohibited fuel-burning under its own air pollution chapter.

That means whether a Greenwich resident, business or event may set off fireworks, and what class of device or state sign-off is required, turns entirely on Connecticut law rather than any Town ordinance. The Director of Health, who administers Chapter 8 under Section 8-3, has authority to investigate complaints tied to smoke, odor or particulate nuisance from any combustion source in Town, so a fireworks display that produces a genuine air pollution nuisance separate from the display itself could still draw Health Department attention, but the Code contains no fireworks-specific restriction, ban or curfew of its own.
