Greenwich, CT Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Sec. 14-17.1 of the Code of Ordinances is Greenwich's general limit on how long a vehicle may occupy one parking spot, rather than a fixed overnight curfew: no vehicle may sit for more than twenty-four consecutive hours on any street, on the full width of any publicly maintained way open to travel, or on Town-owned or leased property the Board of Selectmen and Police Commission regulate for parking. Subsection (a) treats every additional hour past the twenty-four as its own separate and additional offense, so a car left for two full days can accumulate multiple citations rather than one.

Subsection (b) makes clear the twenty-four-hour rule does not excuse a driver from any more restrictive schedule elsewhere in Chapter 14, such as the timed one-hour or two-hour zones in Schedules III and IV or the residential permit streets in Schedule X, all of which apply on top of this general limit. Subsection (c) exempts Town-owned vehicles from the twenty-four-hour cap entirely. Separately, Sec. 14-14 imposes a narrower nighttime restriction on specific streets in Schedule XI, barring any parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. so Public Works crews can sweep those streets.

Violations of Sec. 14-17.1 are penalized under the general Chapter 14 fine structure in Sec. 14-34, which lets a police or parking enforcement officer serve a notice on the vehicle and doubles or triples an unpaid fine after fifteen and thirty days respectively.
