Greenwich, CT Parking Rules: Snow Removal Parking Rules (2026)

Chapter 14, Article 3 of the Greenwich Code of Ordinances defines the terms behind the Town's winter parking rules at Section 14-39: a snow alert is declared ahead of an expected accumulation, a snow emergency once falling or fallen snow actually restricts safe travel, and the Traffic Authority is the Board of Selectmen sitting as the Police Commission. Section 14-40 lets that Traffic Authority declare a parking ban on part or all of the snow area, meaning every public street, right-of-way and off-street lot under its jurisdiction, whenever snow is falling, forecast or already fallen.

Designated snow routes run every year from November 1 through April 15 and are marked with signs the Department of Public Works posts under Schedule XXI; a parking ban can also be layered onto other streets at the Traffic Authority's discretion under subsection (c) and stays in force until the Authority announces it terminated under subsection (d). Section 14-41 lets police tow and impound any vehicle left on a snow route or banned area, issuing a notice of violation with a fine set under Section 14-34's chapter-wide parking penalty schedule, and Section 14-41.1 separately fines anyone who shovels, plows or blows snow from private property back onto a public street or sidewalk.

A stalled vehicle left in the snow area during an active emergency draws a fine of not more than twenty-five dollars under Section 14-45 unless the driver is actively seeking help, and recovering an impounded vehicle outside the Town's release procedure under Section 14-43 carries a fine of not more than one hundred dollars or up to thirty days in jail. The Traffic Authority must broadcast and publish each ban, alert or emergency at least twice, with the restriction taking effect no sooner than two hours after the first announcement under Section 14-45.1.
