Pontiac, MI Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Section 86-296 restricts consumer fireworks, defined by reference to federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standards and American Pyrotechnics Association Standard 87-1, to the day preceding, the day of, or the day after a national holiday, and bars use between 12:00 midnight and 8:00 a.m. on those days, or between 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. specifically on New Year's Day; low-impact items such as ground and handheld sparklers under the same APA standard are defined separately and carved out of the "consumer fireworks" term. Section 86-297 makes any violation of this division a municipal civil infraction rather than a criminal misdemeanor, with a base fine of not less than $100.00 and not more than $500.00, plus costs, damages, expenses and other sanctions, and the Code's repeat-offender scheme layered on top: a first repeat offense within the lookback period draws no less than $300.00 plus costs, and a second or later repeat offense draws a flat $500.00 plus costs.

Each day a violation continues counts as a separate offense, and the City can go to the local district court for an injunction or other process to stop repeated violations. This division, added by Ordinance No. 2265 in 2012, sits alongside the older Division 3 fireworks licensing scheme in Sections 86-291 through 86-295.
