Pontiac, MI Animal Ordinances: Veterinary Clinic Zoning (2026)

Section 2.533 of the Pontiac Zoning Ordinance sets four development standards for a veterinary hospital or clinic use. Section 2.533(A) requires outdoor runs or similar holding areas to sit at least 50 feet from any adjacent property line or any adjacent property used by the public, and bars them from any required front, rear, or side yard setback area; it also requires animals to be housed inside an enclosed building between 9:00 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., mirroring the overnight enclosure rule Pontiac applies to kennels and pet boarding facilities elsewhere in the same Animal and Agricultural Uses group of sections.

Section 2.533(B) requires used material to be disposed of in appropriate on-site containers for transport to a licensed waste facility, with animal waste disposal kept consistent with local health department regulations. Section 2.533(C) requires the facility and its operational procedures to meet necessary licensing requirements, which for a veterinary practice means state veterinary licensure in addition to any City permit. Section 2.533(D) is the most operationally significant limit: all medical and surgical procedures must occur within a completely enclosed building, so a clinic cannot perform exams, treatment, or surgery in an outdoor run or a covered but open-air structure.

Read together with the 50-foot setback on outdoor holding areas, these standards push the clinical and boarding functions of a veterinary practice toward the interior of the site, away from adjacent residential or public-use properties.
