Pontiac, MI Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Pontiac's zoning ordinance does not carve out a separate fence permit; instead it folds fences into the general construction permit rule. Section 7.301 defines 'Structure' as any constructed or erected materials the use of which requires location on or connection to the ground, and lists fences by name alongside buildings, sheds, storage bins, and signs. Section 6.701.A then makes it unlawful to commence construction of any building or other structure, including an accessory structure, once the work costs more than $200, until the building official issues a zoning compliance permit certifying that the plans, specifications and intended use conform to the ordinance.

Because fences are structures under § 7.301, a new fence, or the alteration or repair of an existing one above that $200 threshold, needs that same permit before work starts. The application goes to the building official on the City's forms under § 6.701.C, and where the fence also needs a building permit, the zoning compliance application is filed at the same time as the building permit application under § 6.701.C.1; where no building permit applies, the zoning application must be filed at least ten days before the fence goes up under § 6.701.C.2.

A permit, once issued, is valid for six months from the date of issuance under § 6.701.D, and any fence approved through a variance or a use requiring Planning Commission or Zoning Board of Appeals action is limited by whatever conditions those bodies impose under §§ 6.701.E and .F.
