Outdoor burning rules in Orem, UT — also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance — set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Open burning in Orem requires a burn permit from the Orem Fire Division and is only allowed during Utah's residential burn windows - roughly March 30-May 30 and Sept. 15-Oct. 30 - and only when the clearing index is 500 or higher. Burning anything related to property development, including trees and brush from clearing, is prohibited.
Orem follows the Utah residential open-burning rule (Utah Admin. Code R307-202). The burn season for Orem runs from about March 30 through May 30 in spring and September 15 through October 30 in fall; the statewide attainment-area window under R307-202 is April 1-May 31 and September 15-October 31. A person must complete the City of Orem open burn permit application, which is forwarded to the Orem Fire Department, before burning. The National Weather Service clearing index must be at least 500 on the day of the burn or the permit is void. Only allowable materials may be burned (clippings, bushes, plants, and prunings from trees incident to property cleanup) and they must be thoroughly dry; no trash, rubbish, tires, oil, or development debris may be burned or used to start the fire. It is no longer legal to burn anything related to property development, including trees and brush. Under Orem City Code 7-2-11, a burn permit from the City Fire Division is required to start a fire on any forest, brush, range, grass, grain, stubble, or hay land.
Burning without a valid permit, outside the burn windows, when the clearing index is below 500, or of prohibited materials violates Utah Admin. Code R307-202 and Orem City Code 7-2-11 and can result in a citation, permit revocation, and liability for any escaped fire. A voided permit (clearing index under 500) means burning that day is illegal.
